Transforming Dental Education at Universiti Malaya: A Complete Laboratory Reconstruction by Medes

Medes is proud to be part of a major laboratory transformation project at Universiti Malaya, one of Malaysia’s leading institutions for higher education and dental education.

This project goes far beyond the installation of new equipment. Medes was entrusted with the complete reconstruction and modernisation of the existing laboratory facilities, transforming the original spaces into a comprehensive, purpose-built environment designed to support teaching, practical training, research, and the day-to-day technical requirements of a modern dental faculty.

The project also provided an opportunity for Medes to work closely with the university leadership, including a meeting with the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, where we discussed the project and the university’s vision for the future of dental education.

From Existing Laboratory to a Modern Dental Training Environment


One of the most significant aspects of the project was that the existing laboratory had to be completely dismantled and reconstructed.

Medes undertook the extensive process of tearing down the existing laboratory infrastructure and rebuilding the facility from the ground up. This required careful coordination of building works, technical infrastructure, laboratory layouts, equipment installation, and specialist dental requirements.

The reconstruction included the installation of new infrastructure systems, including:

  • Electrical systems and power distribution
  • Compressed air piping
  • LPG gas piping and supply infrastructure
  • Water and drainage systems
  • Laboratory services and connections
  • Specialist equipment infrastructure
  • Purpose-built workstations and laboratory furniture

Every element was planned around the functional requirements of the individual laboratories and the equipment that would ultimately be installed within them.


Freuding Laboratory Workstations

A key component of the project was the installation of Freuding laboratory workstations, providing professional, ergonomic, and highly functional work environments for dental laboratory education and practical training.

The workstations were integrated into the overall laboratory design rather than treated simply as standalone furniture. Their installation was coordinated with the new electrical, compressed-air, gas, water, extraction, and other service requirements of the facility.

This approach creates a cleaner and more efficient working environment while allowing students and technicians to work with equipment and workflows that closely reflect professional dental laboratory environments.


A Comprehensive Dental Laboratory Complex

The reconstructed facility brings together a range of specialized laboratories and supporting areas, allowing Universiti Malaya to provide students and staff with dedicated environments for different stages of dental education and laboratory work.

Orthodontic Laboratory

The Orthodontic Laboratory provides a dedicated environment for orthodontic laboratory procedures, allowing students and staff to undertake practical work using appropriate equipment and infrastructure.

Prosthetic Laboratory

The Prosthetic Laboratory is designed to support practical training and laboratory procedures associated with prosthetic dentistry.

The space incorporates purpose-built workstations and the necessary technical services to support a modern dental laboratory workflow.

Student Laboratory

A dedicated Student Laboratory forms an important part of the facility, providing students with an environment where they can develop practical skills through hands-on training.

The laboratory was designed to accommodate student workflows while maintaining appropriate access to utilities, equipment, and workstations.

Specialist Supporting Laboratories and Rooms


In addition to the main laboratories, the project incorporated a number of smaller specialist rooms, each designed around a specific function within the dental laboratory workflow.

These include:

Trimming Room

A dedicated trimming room provides an appropriate environment for trimming and related laboratory procedures while helping to contain dust and debris away from other working areas.


3D Design Room

The 3D Design Room supports modern digital dental workflows, providing space for digital design and the technologies associated with contemporary dental laboratory production.


Plaster Rooms

Dedicated plaster rooms were incorporated to provide suitable working environments for plaster-related procedures and laboratory preparation.


Casting Rooms

The project also includes dedicated casting rooms, designed to accommodate the specialized requirements of casting procedures and associated laboratory equipment.

Sandblasting Rooms

Dedicated sandblasting rooms provide controlled environments for sandblasting processes, helping to separate these activities from other laboratory operations.

Dedicated Dental Equipment Maintenance Workshop

Another important feature of the project is the creation of a dedicated workshop for maintaining and servicing dental equipment at the Universiti Malaya campus.

This workshop provides a dedicated space for technical personnel to inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and service dental equipment.

Having an on-campus technical workshop can help support the long-term operation of the facility by providing an appropriate environment for equipment maintenance and technical work without disrupting the teaching laboratories.


Infrastructure Behind the Project

While the finished laboratories are the most visible part of the transformation, much of the work took place behind the walls and beneath the working surfaces.

The project required the planning and installation of a comprehensive technical infrastructure network to support the various laboratories and workstations.

This included electrical distribution, LPG gas infrastructure, compressed-air piping, water services, drainage, and other laboratory connections.

The challenge was not simply to install these systems, but to coordinate them with the individual requirements of each room and workstation while creating an efficient and maintainable facility.

The result is an integrated laboratory environment in which the infrastructure is designed around the workflow of the dental professionals and students using the facility.

Meeting with the Vice-Chancellor

 

The project was also an important opportunity for Medes to engage directly with the leadership of Universiti Malaya.

During our meeting with the Vice-Chancellor, we discussed the project, the university's requirements, and the importance of developing modern facilities that support high-quality education and practical training.

For Medes, this meeting represented more than a project milestone. It reinforced the importance of collaboration between educational institutions and industry partners when developing facilities that will serve students and professionals for many years to come.

More Than a Laboratory Installation


The Universiti Malaya project demonstrates Medes' capabilities beyond the supply and installation of dental equipment.

From demolition and reconstruction through to infrastructure installation, laboratory planning, Freuding workstations, specialist rooms, equipment installation, and technical support facilities, Medes was involved in creating an integrated dental laboratory environment.

 

The project brought together multiple disciplines and required close coordination between construction teams, engineers, laboratory specialists, equipment suppliers, university representatives, and technical personnel from across 43 companies.
